10 mg freeze dried extract of Ragweed pollen.
Description
10 mg freeze dried extract of Ragweed (Ambrosia elatior) pollen. Ragweed is a genus of annual plants that usually appear in late spring and can grow up to 70 cm tall. The plant belongs to the Ambrosia genus and is native to North America, where it thrives in disturbed areas, fields, and along roadsides. Although ragweed may seem innocuous, it is infamous for causing allergies in people who are sensitive to its pollen. Ragweed pollen is an extremely potent allergen that can provoke a range of symptoms, such as itchy eyes, throat irritation, runny nose, and sneezing. In some cases, ragweed pollen exposure can even trigger asthma attacks or exacerbate pre-existing respiratory conditions. Since ragweed pollen is lightweight and easily dispersed by wind, it can travel long distances and affect individuals who live far away from the plant. Despite its potential to cause allergies, ragweed also has some positive aspects. For example, it is a vital food source and habitat for a variety of insect species, including bees and butterflies. Even though ragweed can cause allergies, it remains a common sight in many parts of North America and is an integral part of the local ecosystem.
Raw material was cultivated in Middle Europe by collecting branches of trees and put in a greenhouse until the inflorescences matured. After maturing the inflorescences were collected, sieved and extracted with acetone. The pollen have been extracted followed by filtration. They have been freeze dried after dialysis.
Pollen is one of the most common triggers of seasonal allergies worldwide. Depending on the season, weeds, grasses and trees release pollen to fertilize their own species. The wind travels the tiny and light pollen but unfortunately they end up in our noses, eyes and lungs as well. With their powdery, granular appearance they look quite delicate and innocent. In some people they will however trigger an allergic reaction. We mostly relate to this as hay fever. Most common symptoms are a runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes but sometimes also symptoms of the lower airways (asthma). In allergy-prone individuals, their immune system reacts to allergenic proteins by generation of IgE antibodies, a process called sensitization. These antibodies will bind to receptors on mast cells and basophils, the effector cells of allergic diseases. If a pollen-sensitized person then gets exposed in pollen season, these effector cells release various mediators such as histamine. These mediators together are at the basis of starting off the allergic symptoms.
